Hi everyone! I just found this site, and spent a good part of this Thursday night checking it out. I made a post in the Barrett forum after I found it via search engine.
I really enjoyed the artical Pat wrote on the history of Detonics! It brought back some good memories. Im not an expert, Im still learning more as I try to catch up. I was born too late. Im 27 now, and worked at a gun shop since I was legally allowed to. I worked at Central Guns in Seattle for 4 years. The Detonics lore is intresting and is a piece of Seattle history. You still see the people around that formed Detonics.
I've never met Pat (the author of the Detonics history found on this website). But "Sid" Woodcock is still around. He was one of the founders of Detonics. He carries a Kel-tec 32, or a Glock 26 or 27 now instead of a 1911. He is been very busy considering is over 70y/o. He is a Consultant for the new Detonics in Colorado. He is been a Federal Liaison for Special Warfare. He still is Consultant for the Military, CIA, FBI, and has been teaching classes locally. Last time I talked to him, he was designing defences US Power Plants, Water, and Harbors. He teaches Marshal arts classes as well as C.A.T.S. (At 70!) Most of the students were black belts, some owned their own dojo. C.A.T.S class is a counter-terrorist class for civilian detection of gorilla anti-government clans. We learned how someone blows up bridges, assinates high officials, and identifies home made explosives. The classes had hidden Microphones and where monitored. I quit and took real estate classes instead. After 9/11 the class was no longer offered.
Class info can be found at: http://www.sidwoodcock.com/index.tpl
Central Guns on 1rst Ave in Downtown Seattle is still in business. The son runs it now. It has recently combined ACE Loan and Goldmans Jewelery (the owners brothers shop). "Doc" still works there (after 15+years) and is now Vice President of the Washinton Arms Collectors, and active in the NRA. His pro-freedom second ammendment TV show got cancelled. Pornography and "The Bong Hit Championships" now fill his timeslot.
They still have a good selection of Detonics Mags, parts, and holsters. If you need real, original Detonics parts call 206-624-0430
This is a Dive-ish pawn shop with thick history. The first Detonics were made from guns bought there. The scene where the "Duke" shoots the MAC 10 was filmed where they now store ammo. Sly Stallone has frequented while filming 'Assassins'. He thinks only the very wealthy should own guns. Army from 'Mail Call" and "Full Metal Jacket" has a Cigar with the employees when in town. Employees pride themself with cowboy tough attitude, hand rolled tobacco, and a Colt 45.
The Building they used to produce Detonics during the 80's was turned into a public indoor shooting range. WSI (Weapons Safety Inc) was owned by a IPSC shooter/Microsoft millionarre during the 1990's and recently closed. It was a 1rst class shop with prices next to wholesale. Rumor had it his wife wanted him to close due to Seattle's extremely left wing anti-gun politics.
It will be interesting to see the future of Detonics. Detonics offered small, fine quality, large caliber handguns when there was almost nothing else equal available. Now with S&W, Sig, Kimber, Safari, Auto-Ord, Colt, Kings, Springfield...ect...offering 1911's to an already watered down market, it will be a challenging time to re-introduce the Detonics brand.
Please post any new information or your thoughts!
Thanks
