In my experience, shooting IPSC and IDPA matches almost every weekend for eight years, the "legendary" reliability of heavily advertised service pistols is just that - legend; promoted by the marketing departments of Glock, Beretta, et al. Just where did Glock, SIG, H&K, etc. earn their reputations? German police trials? Or in the hands of battle-hardened Austrian troops? I often shoot with cops, who are using their duty pistols, and choking Glocks are so common, that I've taken to whispering "Two hundred, seventy-five thousand and one . . ." at every jam, after Chuck Taylor claimed he fired 275,000 malfunction-free rounds through his M17. Most good service pistols, with good ammo and good mags, can go a thousand rounds without failure, but that's about it. I've found most people who claim things like, "I've had my gun for over three years, and it's never malfunctioned!", will be found to shoot only factory ammo, and only 100 rounds a year. If you shoot hundreds of rounds a week, especially handloads utilizing beat-up range brass, you get to see how guns really work, or don't work.
