I used to shoot serious IPSC with the Combat Master. I made "B" class and shot the Canadian Nationals. Probably shot these in competition for about three years. I used to really enjoy beating some IPSC cowboy with a space gun, shooting my mini from concealment with 230 Gr Hornady FP @ 900 FPS. Kaboom!
Over the years I ended up with about 5 of these, plus a few "DOLTS" [ DET CM slide on a Colt Commander or Combat Commander frame ]. I also built up about a dozen Randall Le May pistols from parts I bought dirt cheap when Randall went bye bye.
Once they are dialled in, the Detonic CMs were pretty reliable. The recoil spring setup were the weak points of these little beasties. I bought as many as I could find, and found I'd get about 1000 rds before I had to swap them out.
I once went through 1200 rds of .45 ammo in a day, shooting mostly the DET CM, interspersed with a Commander and a full house IPSC Standard class built on a Randall Govt frame/slide, with a 6" Bull barrel [ can you say poor mans Scoremaster ]. The CM was almost as reliable as the other guns, but it was definitely more mag sensitive. The very short grip on the CM simply couldn't secure the mags as reliably as the longer frames.
The best replacement springs I found for the triple wound CM springs, were WOLLF singles, but they weren't as good as the triples. I always wanted to try a SEECAMP type stacking recoil spring [ like the one Glock uses on their 26/27 ]
