I've got a custom gun assembled with an Essex chopped frame and Commander slide. It works fine. I used the Essex frame and bobtailed it, since it uses full-sized mainspring housings. I couldn't do that with an Officer's or Kimber, since they have a chopped mainspring housing.
As an aside, I believe Essex makes the basic castings STI uses on their single stack guns. I can't imagine a better recommendation.
