I think your gun store is correct. I think you'll find the barrel has been sleeved to increase the diameter at the muzzle end. My CM has nothing but the last four digits of the serial number on it. Is your gun actually a Mark IV (polished blue finish), or did you assume so due to the barrel markings? The Colt Mk. IV Series 70 was made from approx. 1972-1983.
