Well, I dug out the little pistol and reexamined everything. The extractor is indeed an 80 series after all. I don't know why I thought it was a 70 series... It appears to be an investment casting, so it may not be an Colt part either.

I was very disappointed to see that the smith it took the pistol to made no effort to "fit" it. It was exactly as it came out of the package. So, using the original broken part as a guide, I filed the new "pad" to match the original, gave it a bit of a bend, and it actually held a loaded round in place when installed.

I've done a bit of reading on boards like this in the year or so since I got it back from the local smith, and I guess I've learned enough to give it a try.

I ran 50 rounds through it without a single failure to extract or feed. I understand 50 rounds is not definitive, but it certainly is a good start.

One problem, though, is it did not want to hold the slide back after the final round had been fired. I do know that the slide stop is supposed to be pushed up by that "stepped down" part of the magazine follower. It seemed to work perfectly while moving the slide by hand.

I'll figure it out... eventually.
